The way a room looks and feels affects my mood. I’m sure I’m not the only one that is this way. When it comes to romance, the way a room is kept will either put me in the mood, or destroy it. That is why it is so important to me to have a bedroom that feels romantic.
We have always been on a limited budget. Creating a bedroom with the right feel without spending extra money hasn’t been easy, but it has been doable.
Check out what I have done to put together a romantic room on a small budget.
Free Things You Can Do To Make Your Bedroom Romantic
It has only been in the last three years that we have been given matching furniture, a beautiful bedspread with pillows, and complimenting wall decorations. Up until that point, we had a plain white bedspread and furniture that were opposite colors as well as styles.
What you have to decorate with is not what makes a room romantic. There are a lot of things you can do for free that will make your current room feel amazing to you. No matter what my room has looked like, it has always felt romantic to me.
Have The Right Attitude
My bedroom has looked different in every home we have lived in. Over the years, I have been given different things to decorate with. There isn’t anything in particular that makes my room feel sexy other than my attitude towards it.
No matter your decor, if you look at your room as a place where you and your lover connect, then it will seem romantic to you.
Make your bedroom a sacred place where you and spouse spend time connecting through love making, conversation, and doing life.
Keep It Clean
Every morning, Austin and I make our bed. This has done huge things in the way of keeping the area clean. I’ve always worked to keep the clutter out, but we’ve battled piles of laundry over the years.
Now that we make the bed each day, we are forced to put away the laundry that comes into our room.
In order for me to feel relaxed and romanced, my environment needs to be clean. If it is not clean, then I will feel like I’m going to bed leaving things undone.
Sure, I do leave things undone at night, but I can go into my room and pretend there are not dishes at the sink. If I go into a different messy area, then I didn’t escape the daily grind of my home.
Make It Off Limits To The Kids
When I was growing up, we were not allowed to go into my parent’s room unless we were either invited, or asked permission. My parents felt like there was no reason for us to be in there in general. Even now, I stay out of that area without asking to go in there.
Ever since we had our first child, Austin and I have kept our room off limits for the most part. It has been one of the best things we have ever done for the cleanliness of the area. If you have children, then you know what I’m talking about.
There has to be a space in my home that doesn’t get covered in toys or the kid’s stuff. Our bedroom is that place.
I’m not saying that the kids never come into this part of the home, but we do not hang out in there much with them. If they get on the bed with us, it’s only for a few minutes. It takes less than 5 minutes for a cuddle session to turn into a wrestling session.
Instrumental Jazz Music Sets The Scene
Playing the right music in the background can make your area feel very romantic.Music that is appealing to you will set the scene and help you feel more at ease in your home.
Find a soundtrack or something on YouTube that fits your style. I personally love instrumental jazz music and I play that all the time. This is my favorite vid to play for background music.
Spray The Right Fragrance
The way a room smells can make it seem romantic. Spritzing a bit of body splash or air freshener in the room can go a long way. Sometimes, I will burn a fragrant candle if I have the right scent.
Scents that work best as an aphrodisiac is jasmine, lavender, vanilla, and sandalwood to name a few. Musky scents are always a winner when setting the mood. Try out different fragrances until you find what you like.
Decorations That Do Not Cost Much
By nature, I am a crafter. I know that not everyone in the world is like that. However, I think you can spend just a little bit of money and make a beautiful area that belongs to just you and your spouse.
Here are a few things I did to decorate my home. Hopefully you will get some ideas on what to do in your own place.
Lighting is very important to me in general. Overhead lights really bother me when I’m trying to relax. Christmas lights on the other hand, give off just enough light to set the ceiling aglow without hurting my eyes.
When I moved here from my last home, I had 2 strands of Christmas lights leftover from an outdoor display we used to do. I didn’t have a space for the lights here, so I placed the two strands in my bedroom.
If you are looking to purchase Christmas lights for your home, I would suggest catching the lights on sale after the holiday. I bought two brand new boxes for my fireplace and another area for about $3.00 a box.
I love these lights anywhere. It is so easy to plug them in and I don’t have to worry about lighting candles if I don’t want to.
2. Homemade Decorations
We have purchased very little in the way of decorations over the years. I’ve been given almost everything in my home. What I haven’t been given, I have crafted myself. Most of the crafts I do are upcycled from old items.
The wall hanging in the picture on the right is actually a cereal box that I covered with black material. Then I painted the design on the material and glued beads to it.
Austin printed out the picture on the left and painted that old wooden frame we found somewhere. It is perfect in our place.
3. Candles Of Any Kind
Two years ago, Austin gave me a large candle holder to put on the wall above our bed. I really love this rod iron holder. Apparently there was more to the set and Austin purchased the other pieces for me this past year.
Everything in that set matched with the candle holders a friend of mine gave me. That silver candle holder is in the top right of the picture.
It really means a lot to me that he chose to invest money in the way our room looks. We haven’t been able to purchase decorations for the rest of the home, but this area is very special to us.
Prior to that, I had these half toilet tissue rolls on the wall. I covered the rolls in black material and glued beads to it.
That was a fun piece of DIY wall art that I had hanging up for a while. I had three of them hung on the wall in between the draped curtains.
4. Draped Material Across The Windows And From The Ceiling
You don’t have to know how to sew in order to make a valance. I used sheer material and wrapped it around the curtain rods. This was a simple, yet elegant way of making the place look beautiful.
Also, I hung a dowel rod from the ceiling and draped the same sheer material from it to hang beside my bed. I already owned this material, so it didn’t cost me anything to do this. I hope you walked away with some great decorating ideas for decorating a romantic bedroom, from this post. It is important to make your home a place where you can relax and feel comfortable.
