I wouldn’t consider myself to be a true crunchy momma by any stretch of the imagination….I still feed my kids Doritoes and we all drink sodas. (btw, crunchy refers to focusing on a natural health approach to life.)
However, I made some major diet changes to back in October that has resulted in amazing health changes for me. I believe a lot of what I’ve dealt with has been due to an unhealthy gut. Getting my diet under control has made a huge difference.
For one thing- I’ve lost 20 pounds to date.
I wasn’t trying to lose weight, but it just happened when I eliminated certain foods from my diet.
The weight loss has been nice, but has been revolutionary has been my ability to breathe better. I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 2, and I’ve struggled with it ever since.
Back in October, I decided to reduce my dairy intake to 2 times a month, and I’ve been less congested ever since. It has been amazing to me how much better I can breathe. Want to know something else that has floored me? I can run! There has never been a time in my life in which I could run for me that 2 seconds without throwing myself into an asthma attack.
3 Food Groups I Avoid
Aside from basically giving up dairy, I also avoid grains and sugar as much as humanly possible. I still end up eating those things from time to time, but I try to limit it to about 3 times a month.
Why did I give up the grains and sugar? I wanted to see if those things were affecting my asthma as well. While I can’t be certain that either of those things contribute to my asthma, I can tell you that when I eat too much, I feel sick to my stomach. I try to avoid it as much as possible for that reason.
It’s Not Always Easy to Stick With It
Taking on this radical of a diet change has certainly presented our family with challenges. It is hard for me to find filling meals when we are out to eat. Also, it makes it difficult for others to cook for me. These instances can be really discouraging to me. I just remind myself how much better I feel physically and push forward.
It isn’t that hard to cook grain free, dairy free, and sugar free if you stick with super basic meals. Just cook a protein and two vegetables, and your meal is complete. However, I get cravings for things like muffins, pancakes, and desserts on occasion. I’ve been experimenting with different recipes that use coconut flour, almond flour, and soy flour.
I’m super excited about this bundle sale I ran across. It is called the Gut Health Super Bundle. There are 7 cookbooks that have grain free recipes or paleo recipes. I’m so excited about these books, because I want to get better at baking grain free.
