marriage books I recommend

There are some books that you can read that will really help your marriage. I put together a list of a few books that I have found to be good for Austin and I.

Love Talk Starters- Les and Leslie Parrott

Austin and I have had this book for a number of years and we love it. We take it out with us every time we go on a date. In fact, it sits in our van most of the time, which is why it looks so worn out now.

This book is great to help you have conversations with your spouse that do not have anything to do with work or kids. It is so important to take a break from your responsibilities and reconnect as a couple.

Rising Strong- Brene’ Brown

I’ve been reading this book for a few weeks. In fact, I actually bought it for a friend and told her I needed to “borrow” it from her before I gave it to her. Yeah…she’s that kind of friend that she doesn’t mind that I do that.

This is a not a book about marriage exactly, but it is a book that will help everyone to rise strong after their fails. Brene’ talks about this fight she and her husband have and how profoundly they handled it in this one instance. That moment forever changed them as people and as a couple.

A Sacred Marriage- Gary Thomas

This book was given to Austin and I when we got married. Our friend was in seminary at the time, and he had been assigned this book for one of his classes. It revolutionized his understanding of marriage, so he passed it along to us.

Gary Thomas does an amazing job answering the question, “What if God designed marriage to make us Holy more than to make us happy?”. How is that for flipping the world’s concept of marriage on its head?

Night Light Devotional For Couples- Dr. James and Shirley Dobson

This is a good devotional for couples to do together. Austin and I were given a copy in the first years of our marriage. I don’t remember if we sat down and did this devo together or not, but I’ve read through it. Each day you will get solid marriage advice and thoughts to mull over.

The Resolution for Men- Stephen and Alex Kendrick

If you remember the Love Dare book that came out after Fireproof, this is a good follow up book. The Kendrick brothers focus on helping men understand what it means to be a Godly man and how to work towards being a great leader for your family.

Uprooting Anger- Robert Jones

While this is not a book that is geared towards married couples, dealing with anger is very much a marital issue. We all have anger problems that we have to work through. This book gives good biblical counsel and direction of how to get to the root of your anger problems so you can eliminate that from your life.

When Good Men Are Tempted- Bill Perkins

Bill Perkins address the sexual temptations that a man faces in marriage. He deals with everything from lust, to porn, to other temptations a man struggles with in his marriage. This is a book that can be helpful to any man who wants to know how to deal with temptations and not succumb to what they desire.

The Unveiled Wife- Jennifer Smith

I have followed Jennifer Smith for a several months on her blog, The Unveiled Wife. She wrote this book and shares about her struggles with pornography and how she opened up to her husband. God showed her that she needed to be honest with her husband so that they could experience true intimacy. When you keep secrets from your spouse, you cannot experience true intimacy.

These are just a few of the books that I suggest for those in marriage. Some of them are also practical self help books that will help you be a better spouse.

  1. these look interesting. Have you read Love and Respect? We’ve been working our way through that book and it’s been really eye opening! I think one advantage to reading a marriage book together is that it gets you talking. And open communication is so very important to good teamwork in marriage.
