Have you ever wondered why we give diamond rings for engagement and anniversaries. I invited Belinda Strum on to share with us some reasons why.
Here’s what she has to say-
Real diamonds look absolutely gorgeous, and are one of the most mesmerizing stones you can find out there today.
The Origin of Giving Diamonds
There are a few things you should probably know about diamonds before you make them the basis of your entire jewelry collection. These pretty little stones used to be rare, but these days not so much. The reason they are so highly associated with weddings and other special occasions, was down to one very successful marketing gimmick.
Back in the 1930s, very few people actually used the diamond to propose. Then, one advertisement changed it all. The ad made diamonds out to be very rare and valuable; a sure sign of esteem, and your love for another. Suddenly, billions were being spent on diamond rings.
Songs were written about the stones; Diamonds Are Forever, and Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend being two of the most well known.
This trend never gave way, and people still spend all of their money on diamond jewelry today. Some people like to be rebellious and choose different stones for their precious jewelry. Some people still see the value in diamonds from all those years ago. Which category do you fall into?
If you’re the kind of person who would rather not spend their life savings on a diamond, there are some diamond alternatives you can look into. Diamantes are designed to look like diamonds, although they are deemed nowhere near as valuable as the real thing. That being said, when used in a quality setting, you can barely tell the difference.
Then you have semi precious stones:
These stones are said to have different properties for the wearer, and look beautiful. They’re perfectly suited to people who prefer a more ‘natural’ or ‘authentic’ look. Plus, they’ll barely make a dent in your savings!
You also have precious stones
These colored stones aren’t as expensive as diamonds, but they can still make a dent in your bank balance.
Let’s not forget about colored diamonds, either. They’re great for those who want all of the luxury while remaining alternative and true to their style.
Why Diamonds Might Still Be A Girl’s Best Friend
OK, so now you know a bit of background, there are some reasons a diamond may still be a girl’s best friend. They’re associated with love and wealth – they have been for years, so this is not going to change any time soon. It’s how we’ve been conditioned to look at them!
With the guide Diamond Price List: Get the Real Diamond Prices you can make sure you’re not paying more than you need to for a quality stone. Diamonds last forever too, providing you look after them. You can wear them with everything, which is great if you need pieces you can wear every day. They can become a girl’s legacy too; passing them down to your children/grandchildren will be a joy.
