How I Started My Freelance Writing Business On Fiverr

How I Started My Freelance Writing Business on Fiverr

Many of my Periscope viewers have asked me to share with them how I started my freelance writing business. I thought I’d share how I was able to get started.

In November of 2013, I took a step that changed the direction of my life- I opened a writing gig on Fiverr.com. After reading a post here about how to earn extra cash before Christmas, I decided to try it out.

The biggest question I receive is, “How do you find clients?”. For me, the answer is Fiverr. I’ve only had 4 clients come to me outside of this platform, so I would say I’ve been very successful here.

Fill Out The Profile Information

Fill out your profile as best as you can. It will ask you to upload your portfolio, but if you don’t have anything to showcase, that is ok. I still don’t have examples of my work on my gigs. Also, use a real picture of yourself and upload a video if you can.

Determine What You Will Offer

Fiverr packages

Theoretically, you can offer just about any service you like on this platform. I’ve even seen people sell small crafts, but that doesn’t meant those gigs were purchased.

Check the number of reviews a gig has to determine if it has been popular.  Also, look at what is being featured by the Fiverr team.

This is the perfect marketplace for small business owners to get what they need done. That includes website helps, social media marketing, graphic design, writing, and so on.

Create a Gig With Targeted Services

Fiverr gigs

Put together a different gig for every service you offer. I have a few gigs; one targeting blog posts and one targeting website content. Go with specific words that a buyer may put in the search box.

Offer Something Worth Having for $5

Make your basic gig something worthwhile to the buyer. My basic gig gives the buyer 300 words for $5. That gives them a decent article that they can actually use. Once people know what kind of work you provide, they will be willing to spend more.

You can put together different levels of packages so you can showcase more of your services to potential buyers. Look at what other sellers are offering in their packages to get a good idea of what you can do.

Switch Up What You Offer

If you put together a gig that doesn’t work for you, then switch up what you are offering. Don’t be afraid to change your services, how long you will take to deliver, and what keywords you use. Eventually you will find a sweet spot of what gets you noticed.

Deliver High Quality Work

The biggest complaint I hear about this platform is the small amount you make for what you provide. Agreed. Making $4 after Fiverr takes cut is small, but you can use it to your advantage.

Many people are skeptical of the services they can purchase on this platform. It seems to good to be true. In fact, many buyers on this platform have received poorly done work and are looking for a better outcome when they buy your gig.

This is where you need to wow them. Put in real time and effort into what you produce. Having a satisfied buyer should be the top of your priority list, because that leads to a long term buyer.

Refer Potential Buyers to Your Website

One of the best decisions I made was to create a website for my services. This website doesn’t get much traffic, but it is a way for me to share samples with buyers. It shows that I’m legitimate.

This is a way someone has access to your contact information without violating your agreements with Fiverr. As a seller, you are not supposed to initiate contact outside of the platform.

Suggest More Services to Long Term Buyers

Take the time to ask your buyer about their project. Find out what they plan to do with your work and really listen to their needs. Once you have a good understanding of what they do, you can offer more services to them.

Come up with specific tasks you can complete for them and ask if they would like to add that on to their order. For example, I will offer to upload the content I write to a buyer’s website for them. I can also offer to find a royalty free image for their post.

Check in After Submitting Completed Orders

If you don’t hear back from your buyer after you’ve submitted your completed order, then check in with them. Ask if they liked what you produced or if there is anything else you can do for them. This is a great way to get a repeat customer.

Keep Gigs in Good Standing

Keep your gigs in good standing by answering correspondence within 24 hours and delivering your work on time.  If you don’t do those two things, it will hurt your ratings.

There is a vacation mode that you can set your account on. If you plan to use this mode, don’t use it for more than a week- two at the most. You are better off changing the turn around time on your gigs than using this feature. Fiverr wants active sellers and will give preference to them.

I’ve been very successful in my freelance writing business on this platform. This has been the best decision I made for myself, my marriage, and my family.

The key to success on this platform is to provide high quality work, regardless of pay. People will come back to you if you do a good job.
